The Carlisle School's most famous student, Jim Thorpe was the greatest American athlete of his era. Indeed, after Thorpe won gold medals in both the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, King Gustav V of Sweden declared him the greatest athlete in the world. In 1913, Thorpe was stripped of his gold medals after the Amateur Athletic Union found out that he had played minor-league baseball from 1909-10.
