General Ambrose Powell Hill commanded Lee's Third Corps. Although he delivered a fairly lackluster performance at Gettysburg, Hill would remain one of Lee's trusted corps commanders until he was shot and killed by a Pennsylvania soldier on April 2, 1865; just days before Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
