Strong Vincent began the war as a company captain in the 83rd Pennsylvania and eventually became its colonel. At Gettysburg, he led a brigade in General Meade's old Fifth Corps. Spying a staff officer looking for his division commander, Vincent intercepted the man and learned that a brigade was needed on Little Round Top as quickly as possible. Without waiting for orders, Vincent took his men to the hill, deploying only minutes before the Rebels attacked. Here, Keith Rocco captured the moment as Vincent instructs Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain of the 20th Maine to hold his position on the left flank no matter what the cost.
