After immigrating from Germany in 1852, Carl Schurz (1829-1906) became a journalist, reformer, and U.S. envoy to Spain. At the Battle of Gettysburg he was a division commander in the Eleventh Corps, which contained more than a few German regiments. After the war, Shurz served as U.S. senator, Secretary of the Interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes, and managing editor of the New York Evening Post. He died in New York in 1906.
