When General J.E.B. Stuart finally reached Lee's headquarters on the evening of July 2, 1863, he received a sharp rebuke from Robert E. Lee. Because of his absence from the army when Lee needed to know the exact whereabouts of the Army of the Potomac at all times, J.E.B. Stuart would shoulder some of the blame for the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg. Still, Stuart remained in Lee's good graces and continued to lead the army's cavalry until mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern, Virginia, in May 1864.
