“He will be Gulliver in the Hands of the Brobdingnagians.” Harpers Weekly, 1880.

In this political cartoon, artist Thomas Nast depicted former Confederate secretary of state Robert Toombs, a powerful force in the Democratic Party, holding Democratic presidential candidate Winfield Scott Hancock like a puppet in his hands. Nast and other Republicans feared that Hancock, if elected, would be a pawn of southern Democrats. Later that year Americans elected Republican A. Garfield of Ohio, like Hancock, a Union general during the Civil War.
