A career army officer, Virginia-born Henry Heth (1825-1899) resigned his commission after Fort Sumter to join the new Confederate army. Well-liked by Lee, Heth was the only general Lee addressed by his first name. Wounded in the head at Gettysburg, Heth would continue to command his division until Lee's surrender at Appomattox. After the war, Heth worked in insurance and for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In his memoirs, Heth claimed that General Pettigrew headed for Gettysburg in search of a large supply of shoes in town, but this explanation has been largely discounted by historians.
