Known as the "Christian General," Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) had lost his right arm at the Battle of Seven Pines in 1862. In June 1863, however, Howard's reputation was under a dark cloud. When Stonewall Jackson's men routed regiments of his Eleventh Corps at the battle of Chancellorsville in May, Howard was disgraced. The upcoming battle at Gettysburg would provide Howard an opportunity to redeem his reputation.
