On the morning of June 29, 1863, "Alleghany" Johnson and his troops were poised to attack Harrisburg, when Ewell received new orders from Lee to reform near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Virginia born but Kentucky bred, Edward "Alleghany" Johnson (1816-1873) had earlier fought in the mountains that became West Virginia. Johnson's men reached the Gettysburg battlefield after the fighting had ended on July 1, but went on to fight conspicuously on the Confederate left at Culp's Hill on both July 2 and 3.
