Robert E. Lee in battle dress.

Born at Stratford Hall Plantation along the Potomac River in Virginia, Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was a son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse Harry" Lee. After a career of 32 years in the Army of the United States and an offer of supreme command at the Civil War's beginning, Lee in June, 1863, was leading the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia north into Pennsylvania.
