On the afternoon June 28, 1863, Confederate brigadier general John B. Gordon rode through York at the head of his brigade of Georgia regiments. There, a young girl dashed out of the crowd and handed Gordon a bunch of roses. In the center of the bouquet was a note that detailed the Union defenses at Wrightsville. Later that day, Gordon shelled Wrightsville and tried to capture the bridge before the retreating Yankees set it on fire.
