A veteran of both the Mexican and Seminole Wars, Major General Darius Nash Couch (1822-1897) was commander of the Department of the Susquehanna during the Gettysburg Campaign, charged with protecting Pennsylvania's capital at Harrisburg and organizing the Pennsylvania militia.
