Late in his controversial career, Thaddeus Stevens transferred his zeal for education to the cause of anti-slavery. As a leader of what became known as the radical Republicans in Congress, Stevens fought for a comprehensive approach to civil and economic rights for ex-slaves during Reconstruction.
