In 1865 Dan Rice funded the construction of a monument to the fallen war heroes of Erie County. Detractors crowed that the monument, which he erected directly in front of his own estate, was more a memorial to his ego than to local soldiers. Rice won out and the monument went up. Dedicated on November 25, 1865, it was reputed to be the nation's first monument to soldiers who died during the Civil War.
