Pearl Bailey had already served as a Good Will Ambassador to the United Nations before Richard Nixon designated her the nation's "Ambassador of Love." On March 7, 1974, she attended a dinner for the nation's governors and their wives. When Nixon began to play "Home on the Range," Bailey quipped, "Mr. President, I want to sing a song; I don't want to ride a horse."
