Black and white photograph of "Phoebe Snow" sitting upon a train seat, with an African-American porter cleaning the train direction across from her.

This photograph was a preparation shot for a postcard advertisement in the early twentieth century. The postcard was part of a famous advertisement campaign by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad company called The Road of Anthracite which emphasized the use of clean-burning anthracite coal over its competitors. Phoebe Snow was a character played by a popular actress to illustrate the clean, scenic, and pleasant journey provided by Lackawanna trains.
