Bierbauer played for the Philadelphia Athletics before joining the Brooklyn team of the new Player's League in 1890. After the demise of the Player's League, the Athletics failed to sign Bierbauer, and in 1891 he went to the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, who acquired the name "Pirates" for "stealing" Bierbauer.
