The transloading of coal from the Switchback railroad to canal boats made Mauch Chunk an important link in the movement of anthracite coal. In this photo one can see coal barges on the Lehigh Canal and coal cars on the Lehigh Valley and Jersey Central main rail lines, both of which carried enormous quantities of coal from and through Mauch Chunk.
