The communal Harmony Society was successful in many industrial ventures, but the foundation of its economy was agriculture. This late 19th century photograph shows Harmonist at work in the fields of their community of Economy

In the early 1800s the Harmonists were successful in many communally owned economic ventures and businesses. By the time this photograph was taken of hired workers in a Harmonist hayfield in the late 1800s, most of the Harmonists themselves were too old to still be doing farm work.
