Elected governor in 1902, Samuel Pennypacker supported Progressive era reforms in the state of Pennsylvania. An ardent conservationist, he approved the purchase of more than 500,000 acres of land for state forests and tree nurseries. Pennypacker also authorized purchase of the state's first 12,000 acres of game lands.
