New York's Penn Station interior

The largest of the nation's great temples of transportation, Penn Station cost a fortune to build: $112 million in 1910. Awed by its vastness, novelist Thomas Wolfe wrote that Penn Station was the only man-made space he had ever entered that was large enough to "hold the sound of time."
