The mutilation and killing of Pennsylvania Colonel William Crawford by the Delaware Indians on June 11, 1782 inflamed American demands for the removal of all Indians from western Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley. In this painting, the artist imagines the scene as Crawford endures his tortures, bound and naked at the stake. In the background on the left stands a British officer, his presence indicating English collusion in Crawford's execution. On the right is Dr. John Knight, a military surgeon who traveled with the Sandusky expedition and witnessed Crawford's torture and execution.
