A favorite among officers during the British occupation of Philadelphia, Peggy Shippen (17601-1804) was only eighteen when she married Benedict Arnold, an American general close to twenty years her senior. After Arnold's infamous treason–which historians now believe she may have assisted–Peggy followed him first to Canada and then to London.
