Organized by postal worker Ed Bolden, the Hillsdale Daisies won Eastern Colored League pennants in 1923-25, and lost five games to four to the Kansas City Monarchs in the first Negro League World Series in 1924. Known as the "Black Babe Ruth," Hall of Fame catcher Louis Santop, wearing chest protector in the back row, was the league's highest paid player and biggest drawing card in the early 1920s.
