Pressing plants was the best way to preserve them as specimens for scientific study. In 1795, Philadelphia botanist Benjamin Smith Barton pressed this sample of Heliotropium Indicum, a plant found by botanist William Bartram on his 1761 expedition to Cape Fear, North Carolina.
