The nation's leading botanist, Benjamin Smith Barton – seen here surrounded by his watercolors of mushrooms– published his Elements of Botany in 1803, the same year that Lewis visited Philadelphia. Poor health prevented Barton from joining the expedition, but Lewis did take along Barton's textbook.
