Leni Lenape fished and navigated this waterway for centuries before Swedish settlers drove them from the area in the late 1600s. The peaceful waterway became the focal point of the Battle of Brandywine when General Howe and his British army attacked from the west towards Philadelphia. Historically, the river was five-to-six feet deep, but modern development has significantly reduced its depth.
