Born and raised in Philadelphia, Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) moved to London in 1884 and remained there for the next thirty years.  A skilled illustrator and lithographer, Pennell also wrote books, many of them in collaboration with his wife, author Elizabeth Robins Pennell.
