First propagated by York County farmer Jonathan Jessop, the York Imperial Apple in the 1820s was called "Jonathan's Fine Winter," after its creator.  The new apple quickly spread from Pennsylvania into other states. In the 1850s renowned American horticulturalist Andrew Jackson Downing called it the "Imperial of Keepers" because of its excellent storage ability.
