It was while living in this house in New Brighton, PA, that Sara Jane Clarke began her writing career under the pen name “Grace Greenwood.” Clarke took the name from the Greenwood Institute, the girls’ academy where she went to school. New Brighton remained her home base until 1853 when she married Leander K. Lippincott and moved to Philadelphia. Her home is now the rectory of Christ Episcopal Church, which is located next door.
