Born in the Golden Triangle, a tough Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Pittsburgh, David Lawrence never received a college education, but he did learn politics, and in the early 1930s emerged as one of Pennsylvania's most powerful New Deal Democrats. After serving an unprecedented four terms as Pittsburgh's mayor, Lawrence became the Commonwealth's first Roman Catholic governor in 1959
