In the late 1800s, Pittsburgh steel magnate Andrew Carnegie embodied rags-to riches dreams of American immigrants. Born in Scotland, Carnegie came to Pittsburgh as a child with his parents, and worked his way up from a bobbin boy in a cotton mill to messenger boy to owner of one of the nation's largest and most profitable industrial enterprises, the Carnegie Steel Company.
