Between 1937 and 1941 Croatian artist Maxo Vanka (1889 –1963) painted an extraordinary series of 22 murals in St. Nicholas Croatian Church, just outside Pittsburgh in Millvale, PA. Reflecting Vanka’s fervent belief in social justice, they offer commentary on the Croatian experience in Europe and America, war, poverty, and redemption.
