Built in 1901 in Glasgow by John Brown Co. Ltd. The Merion was an 11,635 ton, two-screw steamer with a passenger capacity of 150 in second class and 1,700 in third. The Merion ran for the American Line in the Liverpool-Philadelphia service from 1903-1907. It was one of three passenger liners named after towns in southeastern Pennsylvania that carried immigrants from Europe to Philadelphia in the early 1900s.
