Settled by Scots-Irish settlers in the mid-1700s, Chambersburg had its first Catholic church in the 1780s, and its first Jewish cemetery by the 1840s. Chambersburg was invaded three times by Confederates during the American Civil War, and much of the town burned down on July 30, 1864.
