A native of Baden, Johann Heinrich Keppele (1716-97) ran an importing business on Market Street, served in the Pennsylvania Assembly, and from 1764 to 1781 served as the first president of the German Society of Pennsylvania. Keppele had witnessed 250 of his fellow passengers die during his own immigration to Pennsylvania.
