The size and grandeur of the Rodef Shalom Synagogue is evidence of the wealth of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community by the early 1900s. On Saturday, May 29, 1909, President William Howard Taft visited Rodef Shalom and became the first sitting United States president to speak from the bimah of a Jewish congregation during regular Sabbath services.
