The Bartrams' discoveries included the Venus flytrap and a small flowering tree they discovered growing along the Altamaha River in Georgia in 1765 that they named Franklinia alatamaha, in honor of Benjamin Franklin. Extinct in the wild by the early 1800s, the tree has survived from seeds the Bartrams propogated in their Philadelphia garden.
