A gifted poet and prolific memoirist, Malcolm Cowley was also one of the most influential book and magazine editors of his generation. In a career that spanned close to sixty years, Cowley helped launch the careers of major novelists, including Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey, and translated works by important French writers into English. As literary advisor to Viking Press (1948-85), he also helped revive interest in the works of William Faulkner and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
