A progressive labor lawyer in the 1920s, Pittsburgh judge Michael Musmanno became an aggressive anti-Communist after World War II. In the 1950s Musmanno was a leader in the movement in Pennsylvania to purge labor organizations of their radical leaders and members. In 1954, he helped author a federal bill to outlaw the Communist Party in the United States.
