James Beaver served as president of Penn State University's Board of Trustees from 1874-82 and again from 1898-1914. While governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891, Beaver also was instrumental in the awarding of state funds to improve Penn State's intercollegiate football field, which the students named Beaver Field in his honor, an honor that continues today in the form of Beaver Stadium.
