Meadville, Pennsylvania banker George Wallace Delamater was a little known state senator when Matthew Quay, in one of his few missteps as leader of state Republican party, selected him the party's candidate for governor in 1890. Delamater's candidacy split the Republican party and enabled Democrat Robert Pattison to win his second term as governor.
