One of Pennsylvania’s most powerful and popular Democratic leaders in the decades following the Civil War, Samuel Randall (1828-1890) was Speaker of the House of Representatives during the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson and a contender for his party's nomination for president in 1880 and 1884. As longtime chairman of the Committee on Appropriations he supported strong tariffs to protect American–and Pennsylvania’s–industries.
