Eddie Lang became a professional musician in 1924 when he joined the Mound City Blue Blowers, a novelty blues band led by comb and paper player Red Mackenzie, which also included Dick Selvin on kazoo. That December, he co-wrote and recorded "Deep Second Street Blues" with the Mound City Blue Blowers in New York for the Brunswick label. Two years later he would team up with childhood friend Joe Venuti and record breakthrough jazz recordings for the Columbia label.
