A founder of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphian Thomas Say (1787 - 1834) was one of the United States' leading naturalists and a pioneering entomologist. A member of the scientific teams on the Academy of Natural Sciences' 1817 expedition to Florida and Georgia, and the Long expedition to Rocky Mountains in 1819, Say served as chief zoologist in Long's expedition to the headwaters of the Mississippi River 1823.
