Opened in 1913, the Phipps Institute was located in the 7th Ward, near the heart of Philadelphia's oldest African-American neighborhood. In the 1910s the Institute pioneered the care of black Philadelphians, a population hard hit by tuberculosis, and trained African-American physicians and public health nurses to work with the community.
