By 1900, fourteen state normal schools were spread geographically throughout the Commonwealth. Like the facility in Indiana, PA, these institutions gradually evolved into teachers colleges and then comprehensive liberal arts universities. Today, Indiana University of Pennsylvania is the only school in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to offer Ph.Ds.
