In the 1800s thousands of Pennsylvanians and tens of thousands of Americans participated each summer in camp meetings, rural retreats that offered a healthy dose of educational and spiritual uplift in a bucolic setting. The Chautauqua movement grew out of the camp meetings that Americans had been enjoying for generations.
