Born in 1864 in the village of Tajov in the Lower Tatras region of Slovakia, Jozef Murgas graduated from Catholic seminary in Slovakia then studied at the Electrical College of Vienna. In 1896 he emigrated to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where he ministered to fellow Slovaks working in the region's booming steel and coal industries. There, too, he continued his experiments in wireless telegraphy, patenting a "Musical Tone System," in 1904 that could create and transmit a variety of sounds.
