In 1854 Samuel Haldeman's brothers built their second iron works, Furnace # 2, at the mouth of Chickies Creek in Lancaster County, PA. The Haldeman family would operate their iron works continuously from 1845 to 1900. "Chickies" was an abbreviation for the Indian word Chiquesalunga. It was also a favorite archaeological site for Professor Haldeman in his later years.
